How Does Breast Augmentation Work?

June 7, 2023 by wpengine

Over 300,000 women undergo augmentation mammoplasty each year in the United States alone. At Nuance Cosmetic Surgery in Folsom, CA, we want you to feel confident and comfortable in your own skin, no matter your age or background. Let us guide you through the journey of achieving your desired breast augmentation results with our expertise and personalized care.

How Does Breast Augmentation Work?

Augmentation mammoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. The process typically begins with a consultation, where you will discuss your goals and concerns with Dr. Sumida and our experienced team.
During the outpatient operation, breast implants are carefully inserted through small incisions and positioned to achieve the desired outcome. The recovery process is straightforward, with most patients experiencing minimal discomfort and a relatively short downtime.

The Initial Consultation

Your journey begins with a warm and welcoming initial consultation at the clinic in Sacramento, CA. We will greet you with care and professionalism, creating a comfortable environment to discuss your breast surgery goals and expectations. During this consultation, we will perform a thorough assessment, taking into account your unique anatomy and desired outcome. We will explain the procedure in detail, address any concerns, and answer all your questions. Additionally, necessary tests such as a breast exam, mammogram, or breast ultrasound may be conducted to ensure your suitability for the procedure. Rest assured that at Nuance Cosmetic Surgery, your safety is our utmost priority.

Will I Get Saline or Silicone Implants?

We primarily utilize saline implants. They consist of a silicone shell filled with a sterile saltwater solution. They offer advantages such as adjustability in size during surgery and a natural feel and appearance.
However, silicone implants may be recommended for certain patients. They are filled with a silicone gel that closely mimics the consistency and texture of natural breast tissue, providing a soft and realistic look and feel. Dr. Sumida will assess your specific needs, body type, and desired outcome to determine the most suitable implant option for you.

Preparing for Surgery

Preparing for your augmentation mammoplasty is an important step. Prior to your appointment, our team will provide you with detailed instructions to follow. They may include avoiding certain medications or supplements that can increase the risk of bleeding, quitting smoking to promote better healing, and maintaining a healthy diet to support your body’s recovery process.
It’s crucial to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from the surgery center on the day of the procedure and to have someone available to assist you during the initial days of your recovery. Additionally, preparing your home by creating a comfortable and relaxing space will contribute to a more positive recovery experience. Our team will guide you through these preparations, ensuring your comfort every step of the way.

The Surgery

Augmentation mammoplasty takes approximately one to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia. At Nuance Cosmetic Surgery, we perform the operation on an outpatient basis, allowing you to return home the same day. Dr. Sumida will make incisions carefully placed in inconspicuous locations, such as underneath the nipple, under the breast crease, or in the armpit, to minimize visible scarring.
The choice of incision location depends on factors such as your anatomy, implant type, and desired outcome. We will discuss these options with you during your consultation to determine the most suitable approach.

The Recovery Process

Following augmentation mammoplasty, you have to give your body time to heal and adjust to the changes. While individual recovery experiences may vary, most patients can expect to resume light activities within a few days and return to work within one to two weeks. However, it’s crucial to avoid any strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or rigorous exercise for at least six weeks to ensure optimal healing.
During this time, you must follow the post-operative instructions provided by our medical team, such as wearing a supportive surgical bra and keeping the incision sites clean and dry. By adhering to these guidelines and taking care of yourself, you can promote a smooth recovery.

The Results

The results of your operation will gradually become more apparent as your body heals. You can expect to see initial improvements within a few weeks. However, it’s important to note that the final results may take several months to fully manifest as your body adjusts to the implants and any post-operative changes.
While follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress, it’s crucial to embrace holistic measures to maintain your results. This includes adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and proper nutrition to support your overall well-being. Wearing a well-fitted supportive bra can also help preserve the shape and longevity of your enhanced breasts.

What Changes Can I Expect?

Undergoing augmentation mammoplasty can bring about several significant changes to your body and well-being. Firstly, you can anticipate an increase in the fullness and size of your breasts, achieving the desired volume that aligns with your aesthetic goals. Secondly, this procedure can enhance the shape and balance of your figure and provide you with a more proportionate and symmetrical appearance.
Beyond the physical changes, many patients experience a boost in self-esteem and confidence, leading to a positive impact on their mental well-being. Feeling more comfortable and satisfied with their bodies can contribute to improved body image and a greater sense of self-assurance.

How Long Do the Results Last?

The results of breast augmentation can be long-lasting, providing you with the enhanced breast appearance you desire for many years or even several decades. However, it’s important to note that breast implants are not lifetime devices and may require future follow-up treatment. While the longevity of results varies among individuals, many patients enjoy their enhanced breasts for ten to twenty years at a time.
Regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Sumida will help monitor your progress and ensure the continued health and integrity of your implants. To prolong the results, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet. Additionally, practicing proper breast care, such as wearing high-quality bras and protecting your breasts from excessive sun exposure, can help preserve the results.

What Is the Difference Between a Breast Lift and Augmentation?

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgery designed to enhance sagging breasts by reshaping and lifting them to a more youthful position. It involves removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to achieve a more lifted appearance. On the other hand, augmentation mammoplasty focuses on enhancing breast size and volume using implants.
While both procedures can be performed independently, they can also be combined if a patient desires both a lift and an increase in breast size. The choice between a breast lift and augmentation depends on the individual’s specific concerns and goals. Patients who are primarily concerned with sagging or drooping breasts may benefit from a lift, while those seeking to increase size or improve overall fullness may opt for an augmentation.

Am I Eligible?

Determining eligibility for augmentation mammoplasty involves various factors, including age and overall health. While there isn’t a specific “best” age for the procedure, it is generally recommended that patients wait until their breasts have fully developed, typically by their late teens or early twenties. However, individual circumstances and personal goals will ultimately guide the decision-making process.
Certain medical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes, active infections, or untreated breast cancer, may impact candidacy. Additionally, it is crucial to have realistic expectations and a thorough understanding of the potential benefits. During a consultation with our experienced surgeon, Dr. Sumida, your specific medical history and aesthetic goals will be evaluated to determine if you are a suitable candidate.
