What is Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammaplasty, removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin of the breast areas to not only make breast size smaller but also to create a proportion that more appropriately fits the patient’s body type.
This procedure is most commonly sought by women whose chronic neck, back and shoulder pain associated with breast size affect their daily activities. A series of incisions are placed around the nipple and extending vertically to the fold of the breast and along the breast fold. Liposuction is also sometimes used in tandem with this procedure in order to accurately shape contour along with the armpit areas.
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and an overnight stay at a hospital is recommended. Although this procedure is typically reserved for women with large, uncomfortable breast size, certain other circumstances may apply. Dr. Sumida will discuss during your consultation whether you are a good candidate for breast reduction surgery.
What is Recovery Like?
The day after surgery, breast reduction surgery patients will wear a supportive dressing to protect and cushion the healing breasts. After that, they can wear a sports bra for 3-4 weeks to allow comfort while the bruising and swelling subside. The immediate effects of smaller, lighter breasts will be felt but it may take the course of a year for the scars to completely heal and the full benefits to be seen.
While the results of breast reduction surgeries are normally long-lasting, it is important to keep in mind that weight fluctuations, aging, and gravity may have an effect over time.
During your initial consultation with Dr. Sumida, you will discuss the possible risks and side effects that may occur after having breast reduction surgery, although it is typically well-tolerated and commonly practiced throughout the country. You will be properly advised about aftercare for your incision sites in order to reduce the risks of infection and adverse effects.
