What is Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Referred to as Nose Reshaping Surgery, the main goal of Rhinoplasty is to improve and regain symmetry, size and proportion. During this procedure, Dr. Sumida is capable of manipulating the nasal structure and tissue in a variety of ways to correct multiple issues, including:
- Correcting the nose’s proportion in relation to the rest of the face
- Large, wide, or upturned nostrils
- Nasal tip that is undesirably shaped
- Asymmetry of nasal tissue that can lead to breathing problems
- Width of the nose, either at the bridge or in the position and size of the nostrils

Rhinoplasty surgery is typically an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia with sedation. Each individual procedure is different, based on the patient’s specific nasal concerns. Although incisions are made in the nasal area, scarring is minimum.
What is Recovery Like?
An external splint or cast will be placed over the nose after surgery to maintain shape during the healing process. In addition, packing will be placed inside of your nose to provide cushion. These may be uncomfortable, but the packing is typically removed after 24-48 hours and the splint can usually come off after one week.
The bruising and swelling typical with Rhinoplasty normally subsides in 2-3 weeks. You will notice gradual changes in the shape and structure of your nose, but the full effects of Rhinoplasty can be enjoyed after 1-2 years as the structure refines to a permanent outcome.
As the body ages, natural changes may occur to your body, but unless otherwise compromised, the results of your Rhinoplasty surgery should be permanent.
