Ear Reshaping

Feeling your best can be difficult when facial features are out of sync. This is especially true for those who experience protruding, enlarged, deformed or disfigured ears. At Nuance Cosmetic Surgery, we offer Otoplasty surgery to help you bring your face back to perfect symmetry.

Contact us at our Folsom office today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Kenneth Sumida, a board-certified plastic surgeon. Doctor Sumida will create a customized surgical plan that outlines your cosmetic goals while still achieving a natural look.

What is Otoplasty?

Also known as ear reshaping surgery, Otoplasty can improve the shape, proportion, or position of the ears in both children and adults. This procedure can also correct defects present from birth or fix ear deformations caused by accidents. Commonly, adults with protruding ears, abnormally enlarged ears, or who have experienced dissatisfaction with previous ear reshaping surgeries request this procedure.

What Otoplasty entails depends on the patient’s concerns and anatomy. It is generally done under either local or general anesthesia, although general anesthesia is recommended for children. Incisions are made behind the ear and are typically not visible.

Your initial consultation with Dr. Sumida will help determine whether you are a good candidate for Otoplasty surgery.

What is Recovery Like?

The purpose of ear reshaping is to create a natural look with balanced facial symmetry. Doctor Sumida will outline with you during the consultation which procedural methods he will use and what your expectations are for your reshaped ears. After the surgery is complete, a head dressing will be placed over the treated ears for 5-7 days to protect the healing tissue while maintaining structure and shape. Once this dressing is removed, you may return to normal daily activities.

Experiencing discomfort immediately after Otoplasty is typical and can normally be treated with pain relievers. During your consultation, Dr. Sumida will discuss the potential risks and side effects carried with Otoplasty surgery. You will also be informed of any aftercare procedures for your incision sites, although it is typically recommended not to remove your bandages before healing is complete as you may compromise the new, fragile structure.

The results of Otoplasty are permanent, although the immediate appearance of results is dependant on the type of ear reshaping performed. For the treatment of protruding ears, results can be observed right away after healing is complete and bandages are removed. For more extensive surgeries, results are usually more noticeable over time as the ears heal and the new ear positions fully adjust to the facial structure.
