Dysport® is used to treat cervical dystonia which causes severe spasms in the neck. It is also used to treat facial wrinkles. A 2011 study showed that Dysport® is especially effective at treating crows’ feet wrinkles.
Dysport was first developed in Europe where it was called Reloxin. It was approved for use in treating forehead wrinkles in 2009.
The Dysport Procedure
Dysport® is given by injection. The doctor will inject Dysport® into a muscle, and may administer multiple injections depending on the size and location of the treatment area. The procedure can take up to 20 minutes.
The effects last around three months or longer, and patients should wait at least three months between injections. Dysport® is somewhat quicker to take effect than other injectables. While some injectables take four to seven days to show results, Dysport® takes one day to one week.
Although the results can last for several months, it will be beneficial to have occasional treatments to maintain that youthful appearance.
What are some of the side effects?
Common side effects of Dysport® can include headache, bruising, or redness at the injection site, but are temporary and should resolve some time after the procedure has ended.
Who should not use Dysport?
People who are allergic to any of the ingredients in Dysport® may not want to get the injections. People who have an infection or weakness in the infection site should wait until the condition has cleared up before getting Dysport®.
Women should tell the doctor if they nursing, pregnant or plan to get pregnant. It is not known for certain what effects, if any, Dysport® would have on an unborn baby or nursing infant. Similarly, it is not known if Dysport® can pass through breast milk.
