Here’s What to Expect From a Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a common cosmetic procedure with a number of benefits, both medical and cosmetic. Most commonly referred to by patients as “nose reshaping” or a “nose job,” rhinoplasty is one of the most widely discussed cosmetic procedures. But despite what most think, the procedure can also be for medical purposes and does not always have to be about making a cosmetic enhancement. There are many benefits for this type of surgery. The experts at Nuance Cosmetic Surgery can help you determine if this procedure is a good option for you.

At times, people turn to cosmetic surgery in hopes it can help eliminate a cosmetic or medical issue. A blocked airway due to a deviated septum is a common problem that can be treated with a rhinoplasty procedure as well. Some cosmetic issues that can be addressed through rhinoplasty include the proportion of the nose in relation to the rest of the face, nose width, nostril size, asymmetry, or nose shape.

When considering rhinoplasty, here are some things to anticipate:

Surgery

Most patients will say that they experienced much less discomfort than anticipated. The reason for this is that the procedure begins by making a minimal amount of very small incisions on the inside of the nose or between the nostrils. The entire procedure typically only takes about two hours to complete, and patients typically feel back to normal by the second or third day. Some minor swelling, accompanied by a stuffy nose may linger, but this is completely normal and will pass.

Post-Surgery

The application of cold packs to the eyes and cheeks is recommended on and off for the first 48 hours after the procedure in order to help reduce swelling, but never directly to the nose. Elevating the head during the week following the surgery will also help with any minor swelling.

Dressing and Suture Removal

The packing that is placed inside the nose for cushion may be removed after 24 to 48 hours. The dressing and sutures will be removed at the first follow-up appointment which is typically scheduled for the first week after the surgery. Some minor swelling can be expected to continue for a few more weeks, but usually fades within 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure.

Results

Although in some cases it can up to a full year to see the final results, many patients say they notice a marked improvement after the initial swelling has subsided. It usually takes tissue some time to heal completely, but once the healing process is complete, the results will continue to last a lifetime.

Work and Routine

Most patients find no problem with returning to work in a week or two, but strenuous activity and exercise are best to be avoided for at first. Light exercise is encouraged to improve blood flow, however,  limiting exercise to short walks for the first ten days after surgery is ideal.
